Retinal Imaging
The office is equipped with the Topcon Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and fundus camera. Our Retinal Imaging screening takes both a photo and an ultrasound image of the retina. We recommend that all patients undergo a baseline test, especially if there is a family history of macular degeneration, diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, glaucoma, macular holes, and/or retinal detachments.
The OCT has sensitive software that aids in early detection of retinal diseases. For example, a patient may come in complaining of blurry vision that is not correctable with glasses. Sometimes retinal photos can show up normal, but the retinal OCT will show fluid, or leaking in between the layers of the retina. In such case, this will warrant a referral to ophthalmology. In the case of diabetic retinopathy, it is hard to tell with only photos if there is macular edema in the back of the eye. The retinal OCT can aid in diagnosis in a matter of minutes.
The retinal OCT also helps in detection of other diseases like papilledema, optic nerve drusen, distinguish between dry and wet macular degeneration, glaucoma, plaquenil toxicity, central serous retinopathy and much more.
